Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if beef is leaner)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add diced onion and sauté for about 4 minutes until softened, then stir in minced garlic.
  3. Mix in tomato paste and sprinkle flour over the mixture. Gradually add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Season with thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt for the dumpling dough. Mix in softened butter and milk until just combined.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough onto the beef mixture in the skillet. Cover and reduce heat to low; steam for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Once cooked through, let sit uncovered for 5 minutes before serving.
