  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for buttercream)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream, room temperature
  • Electric Green Gel Food Coloring
  • Black Gel Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line your cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in buttermilk, oil, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Gradually combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture until just mixed.
  5. Divide the batter among prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool in pans for ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  7. For frosting, beat together butter and cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream until desired consistency is reached.
  8. Assemble cooled layers with buttercream between them and decorate as desired.
